Media driver missing error during windows 11 installation
Bought a new PC without OS and made a bootable usb using the official media creation tool. The installation went fine but got the error "A media driver your computer needs is missing" after choosing the disk to get Windows 11 installed. I have no clue about this and the error showed up again when I was trying to do it again. Hope someone could suggest a solution to get it fixed.
Thanks

You used the wrong tool for making Windows 11 bootable USB. Here is the alternative way to help you fix this issue:

The above tricked worked for me when I had the same issue during Windows 11 install.

What NOT to Do if you get the Media driver missing for Windows 11 installation error:
❌ Don't use random "fix Windows 11" tools from sketchy sites
❌ Don't download drivers from third-party sites (use manufacturer sites only)
❌ Don't panic and buy a new SSD (it's not hardware failure)
❌ Don't install Windows 10 instead (same issue may occur)My Recommended Action Plan if you are going to fix the media driver missing for Windows 11 installation error:
1. First: Enter BIOS → Change SATA mode from RST/VMD/RAID to AHCI → Try install
2. If still fails: Download Intel/AMD driver on another device → Load during install
3. If still fails: Check motherboard support page for exact storage driver
4. Last resort: Create new Windows 11 USB with Media Creation Tool (corrupted download possible)
5. Most likely fix (90% of cases): Your motherboard has Intel VMD enabled by default. Either:
Disable VMD in BIOS (change to AHCI), OR
Load Intel VMD driver during installation

This media driver missing for Windows 11 installation error is very common with newer hardware, especially on PCs without pre-installed OS. Your PC has newer storage hardware (NVMe SSD, RAID, or Intel RST/VMD) that Windows Setup doesn't recognize. You need to load the storage driver during installation.
To fix the Media driver missing for Windows 11 installation error If you only have one USB drive:
1. Boot from Windows USB
2. At first screen, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt
3. Type: diskpart → list disk → Note your USB drive number
4. Type: select disk X (X = your USB number)
5. Type: list partition → select partition 1 → assign letter=Z
6. Download driver on another PC, copy to phone, connect phone to problematic PC
7. Copy driver from phone to USB (Z: drive) via Command Prompt
8. Load driver as beforeThis error is frustrating but 100% solvable for free. Your hardware is fine - Windows Setup just doesn't include the specific storage driver your motherboard needs. The driver is freely available from Intel/AMD/your motherboard manufacturer.

The "Media driver missing for windows 11 installation error" during Windows 11 installation typically indicates that the installer cannot access the storage drivers required to recognize or write to the disk. This can happen due to several reasons, especially on new hardware or when using certain storage configurations.
Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the Media driver missing for windows 11 installation error:
1. Change USB Port and Media
- Use a different USB port — preferably a USB 2.0 port if available, as some drives have compatibility issues with USB 3.x ports during install.
- Recreate the bootable USB using the Media Creation Tool or Rufus, selecting the default recommended options.
2.Load Storage Drivers Manually
- Download storage drivers from your motherboard or storage device manufacturer (e.g., NVMe driver, SATA driver).
- Save these drivers on a separate USB drive.
- During Windows setup, when the error appears:
Click "Load driver".
Browse to the folder containing the drivers.
Select and load them.
3. Check Storage Configuration in BIOS
- Switch Storage Mode:
Enter BIOS/UEFI settings.
Find storage configuration (SATA Mode or NVMe Mode).
Change from RAID or Intel RST to AHCI.
Save and restart the installation. - Disable Secure Boot temporarily if needed.
- Disable Fast Boot.

Loading the storage driver manually is useful when Windows 11 Setup cannot detect your SSD or HDD, especially on systems using Intel RST, Intel VMD, or RAID mode. In this case, the installer needs the correct storage controller driver to access the disk, otherwise it shows the “media driver missing” error.
How to fix media driver missing error for windows 11 installation
Step 1: On another PC, go to your motherboard or laptop manufacturer’s website and download the correct Intel RST / VMD or AMD RAID driver.
Step 2: Extract the driver files and copy them to a separate USB flash drive.
Step 3: Start the Windows 11 installation and wait until the media driver missing screen appears.
Step 4: Click Browse, select the USB drive with the driver files, and choose the correct driver folder.
Step 5: Load the driver and wait a moment—once successful, your SSD or HDD should appear in the disk list.
This method allows Windows 11 Setup to recognize your storage device without changing BIOS settings. It’s especially helpful if you must keep RAID or VMD enabled, and once the correct driver is loaded, the installation can continue normally.

Switching the USB port is one of the simplest and most effective fixes for the "A media driver your computer needs is missing" error during Windows 11 installation. This issue often happens because Windows Setup fails to communicate properly with certain USB controllers, especially when the installer is plugged into a USB 3.0 or USB-C port.
To try this method, safely remove the Windows 11 installation USB, then plug it into a USB 2.0 port (usually black, not blue). Avoid using USB hubs, front-panel ports on desktops, or USB-C adapters, as these can interfere with driver detection during setup.
After switching the port, restart the installation from the beginning. In many cases, Windows Setup will immediately continue without showing the media driver error, allowing the installation to proceed normally without any extra drivers or BIOS changes.
In most cases, the Media driver missing error during windows 11 installation will be solved by this trick.
