How to transfer iPhone photos to external hard drive with Windows 11?

Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded to Windows 11 and need help transferring photos (200GB) from my iPhone directly to an external hard drive as backup. My iPhone's storage is almost full, and I’d like to back up all my pictures safely onto an external drive without keeping them on my PC. I’m not entirely sure how to do this efficiently and would appreciate any guidance.

I've already connected my iPhone to my PC, but I'm unsure of the steps to transfer iPhone photos to external hard drive. Are there any specific tools or software I need for this? Also, does Windows 11 have any built-in features to streamline the process in a fast way? I'd prefer a straightforward method that doesn't involve iCloud as there are so many files (more than 3000 images).

Disadvantages of transferring iPhone photos to external hard drive from Windows 11: The external hard drive needs to be formatted in a way that Windows can read it. If you're using a drive formatted for Mac (e.g. HFS+), you may hit a wall. Even if you switch to exFAT for cross-compatibility, you may run into issues with file size or permissions. You don't want to find out mid-transfer that you can't actually write to the drive!

Before starting the transfer, the best thing to do is to check the external drive for errors using Windows' built-in tools. Simply right-click the drive in File Explorer and go to Properties > Tools > Check to fix any potential issues before transferring.

You can transfer iPhone photos directly using the Windows Photos app:

    1. Open the Photos app from the Start menu.
    2. Click the Import button (located in the upper right corner) and select From USB Device.
    3. Select your iPhone and check the photos you want to import. During the import process, when prompted, choose to save the file directly to the external hard drive.
    4. When transferring iPhone photos to external hard drive from Windows 11, you need to navigate to the external drive.

    Tips

    • Check disk space: Make sure your external hard drive has enough space for the photos you want to transfer.
    • Folder organization: Consider creating a folder structure on the external hard drive before transferring; this will help maintain organization.
    • Backup Verification: After transfer, verify that the photos exist on the external drive before deleting them from iPhone to ensure safety.

By following these steps, you should be able to transfer iPhone photos to external hard drive from Windows 11 without storing them on a PC or using iCloud.

If you prefer to transfer photos directly from iPhone to an external hard drive without using a computer, you can use the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. Note that this method is generally slower compared to using a computer, especially for very large transfers, but it can be convenient.

Step 1: Get the Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter or a high-quality third-party equivalent.

Step 2: Plug the adapter into the Lightning port of your iPhone.

Step 3: Use a compatible cable to connect your external hard drive to the USB port on the adapter.

Step 4: Open the Files app on your iPhone. Navigate to your iPhone's photos (usually under "On My iPhone" or "Photos").

Step 5: Select the photos you want to transfer, tap the "Share" icon, and choose "Save to Files." Select your external hard drive as the destination.

Tip: This method may be limited by the external drive's compatibility and the iPhone's file management capabilities. Transferring large amounts of iPhone photos directly may also be slower compared to using a computer. If this does not work in your case, then use some third-party apps to help you transfer iPhone photos to external drive on a PC instead!
