How to set Adobe default for InDesign

I see my default for files created in InDesign is one version back.  But everytime I try to set the Default, I end up in a screen that says Default Apps and shows the old version.  I go to "find app on my pc" find the new version, select it, and I end back in the Default Apps screen with the old app shown as default.  No matter how I select the app, it always ends up back in this screen.  So how do I change my InDesign app to be the latest?

  • I deleted the new version, then reinstalled it. This time when the default apps window came up, the newest version was showing. So I was able to select it as default and it seems to hold.

Something must have happened in the first install that did not allow it to be seen as a possible default.

You are trying to set Adobe default for InDesign, but encountering difficulty due to the old version of InDesign being shown as the default app instead of the latest version. To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

      1. Right-click on a file with the .indd extension and select "Properties".
      2. Click on the "Change" button next to "Opens with".
      3. Click on "More apps" and then "Look for another app on this PC".
      4. Navigate to the location on your computer where the latest version of InDesign is installed  and select it.
      5. Check the box "Always use this app to open .indd files" and click "OK".

This should set the latest version of Adobe InDesign as the default app for opening .indd files. If you continue to encounter issues, you may want to try uninstalling the old version of InDesign and then repeating the above steps.

Yes this is what I have done.  When I get to step 4, I go and find the latest version, click on it.  The screen says Open With.  But then it goes back to the Default screen where the old version is shown.  I never get a button to say Always Use This Version.  It just goes round and round.

I went back and moved the default folder to a different name so it could not be found. So when this happened, I was able to select the latest version. But the screen to open says Just Once and Not Always, so i cannot get this version to remain as default.

Here are the steps to set Adobe InDesign as the default for InDesign files:

    1. Right-click on an InDesign file.
    2. Hover over "Open With" and then click on "Choose another app."
    3. In the "How do you want to open this file?" dialog box, make sure the checkbox for "Always use this app to open .indd files" is selected.
    4. Click on "More apps" and then select Adobe InDesign from the list.
    5. If Adobe InDesign doesn't appear in the list, click on "Look for another app on this PC" and navigate to the location where the latest version of Adobe InDesign is installed.
    6. Select the application file (e.g., InDesign.exe) and click on "Open."
    7. Adobe InDesign should now be set as the default application for .indd files.

If you're still having issues setting Adobe InDesign as the default application, you may need to check your system settings to ensure that the latest version of Adobe InDesign is properly installed on your computer. Additionally, make sure that you have the necessary permissions to change file associations on your computer.

As I said before, this did not work. I had to reinstall the latest version.
