How to set Adobe default for InDesign
- Mar 14, 2024I deleted the new version, then reinstalled it. This time when the default apps window came up, the newest version was showing. So I was able to select it as default and it seems to hold.
Something must have happened in the first install that did not allow it to be seen as a possible default.
You are trying to set Adobe default for InDesign, but encountering difficulty due to the old version of InDesign being shown as the default app instead of the latest version. To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:
1. Right-click on a file with the .indd extension and select "Properties".
2. Click on the "Change" button next to "Opens with".
3. Click on "More apps" and then "Look for another app on this PC".
4. Navigate to the location on your computer where the latest version of InDesign is installed and select it.
5. Check the box "Always use this app to open .indd files" and click "OK".
This should set the latest version of Adobe InDesign as the default app for opening .indd files. If you continue to encounter issues, you may want to try uninstalling the old version of InDesign and then repeating the above steps.
Yes this is what I have done. When I get to step 4, I go and find the latest version, click on it. The screen says Open With. But then it goes back to the Default screen where the old version is shown. I never get a button to say Always Use This Version. It just goes round and round.

I am experiencing the same issue. I suppose this happens because the old and the new Indesign apps have the same name, "InDesign.exe". So Windows thinks you still choose the same app for opening your file, therefore not showing the new app in your application list and thus using the old version. Maybe, Adobe should consider using different names for their new executables. I tried to change the new Adobe Indesign executable and hooray, Windows accepted it. Unfortunately Adobe was not able to open the application this time because of the faulty new name I gave it. 🙂
