GSOD and Chrome left open issue after updating to Insider Preview build 29661.1000

This issue is caused by the AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics driver (version 31.0.21925.1001), which triggers a GSOD (Green Screen of Death) with the error code `SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED` (0x7E)—indicating a failure of the dxgmms2.sys file—while Chrome browser windows, websites, or applications are left open. The incidents occurred twice on September 11, 2026, between 11:33 AM and 12:02 PM, and the issue remains unresolved.

    Your GSOD with SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x7E) pointing to dxgmms2.sys is a classic symptom of a graphics driver failure. The dxgmms2.sys file is a core part of Windows' DirectX graphics management, and it crashes when the underlying GPU driver behaves unexpectedly.

    The repeated SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED stop code with dxgmms2.sys suggests a graphics-stack failure, but dxgmms2.sys is not proof that Windows itself is defective. Because the issue began after an Insider update and involves an AMD graphics driver while hardware-accelerated applications remain open, isolate the driver and build interaction first. Record the exact stop-code screen, Windows build, AMD driver version, and the crash times. Install the latest AMD driver supplied for your processor or motherboard, then test with Chrome hardware acceleration temporarily disabled to see whether the reproduction changes. Do not treat that workaround as a permanent fix. If the crashes continue, submit the crash details through Feedback Hub and include whether the same driver is stable on the previous Insider build. If the PC cannot stay usable, use Windows Recovery to uninstall the recent update or return to the earlier build.
