All Windows Troubleshooters will not open

Hi........

HP Laptop 15-dy2048ca (2L7J7UA)

Windows 11 Home 25H2 OS Build 26200.8117

Intel® Core™ i5 processor

Installed RAM 8.00 Gb

First time here in a long time.

Anyways, my problem is that none of the Window Troubleshooters will open or run.  When I click the "Run" button I get two quick brief flashes from the touchpad cursor, but nothing happens.  The original reason I had to use the troubleshooters is that I had trouble getting update KB5086672 -26200.8117 to install.  But I was able to get the update to install after I ran an In-place Upgrade.

I've tried a lot of suggested solutions, but nothing. as of yet. has brought the troubleshooters back to life.  So far., in almost two days I have tried the following suggested solutions:

Check Path for Temp Folder

Restart Cryptographic Service

Run SFC and DISM Scan

Run Disk Cleanup

Check Group Policy

Try to run Troubleshooters in Clean Boot State

Enable or Restart Required Services

Flush the DNS Cache and Reset the Winsock Catalog

Disable Third-Party Security Software and Firewalls

Rename the Catroot2 and SoftwareDistribution Folders

Modify TEMP and TMP Environment Variables

Enable Troubleshooters in Group Policy Editor

Performed an In-place Upgrade.

Used a System Restore Point.

Surely there must be a solution to this that works.  Isn't there a download or a program where I can wipe out / delete the whole troublesome troubleshooters section and replace it with a troubleshoot section that works?

  • Late last week I was trying to figure this out again.  I decided to check the Microsoft Community Hubs again,  just in case someone had posted a possible solution.  And lo and behold there was a reply to another question similar to mine.  I've copied the solution I found below, it comes from a trusted Microsoft MVP.

To start, you have to do this using the command prompt administrators option.

Type each command (msdt.exe /id .....) below independently and by itself and hit "Enter" after each line is complete.  Wait for it to complete one command before moving on to the next one.

    Network Adapter:

    msdt.exe /id NetworkDiagnosticsNetworkAdapter

    Internet Connections:

    msdt.exe /id NetworkDiagnosticsInbound

    Windows Update:

    msdt.exe /id WindowsUpdate

    Bluetooth:

    msdt.exe -id BluetoothDiagnostic

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service:

    msdt.exe -id BITSDiagnostic

    DirectAccess:

    msdt.exe -id NetworkDiagnosticsDA

    Devices and Printers:

    msdt.exe -id DeviceCenterDiagnostic

    Program Compatibility:

    msdt.exe -id PCWDiagnostic

    Speech:

    msdt.exe -id SpeechDiagnosticCalibrate

    Video Playback:

    msdt.exe -id VideoPlaybackDiagnostic

    Printer:

    msdt.exe /id Printers

    Hardware and Devices:

    msdt.exe /id WindowsHardware

    Audio Playback:

    msdt.exe /id AudioPlaybackDiagnostic

    Power:

    msdt.exe /id PowerDiagnostic

    Display:

    msdt.exe /id Display

    Windows Store Apps:

    msdt.exe /id WindowsStoreDiagnostic

    System Maintenance:

    msdt.exe /id MaintenanceDiagnostic

    Windows Media Player:

    msdt.exe /id WindowsMediaPlayerConfigurationDiagnostic

    Windows Network Diagnostics:

    msdt.exe /id NetworkDiagnosticsDiagPackage

    Windows Security:

    msdt.exe /id WindowsSecurityDiagnostic

    Incoming Connections:

    msdt.exe /id NetworkDiagnosticsInbound

    Outgoing Connections:

    msdt.exe /id NetworkDiagnosticsOutbound

    Network Adapter Settings:

    msdt.exe /id NetworkDiagnosticsDirect

    Shared Folders:

    msdt.exe /id SharedFoldersDiagnostic

    Internet Explorer Performance:

    msdt.exe /id IePerfDiagnostic

    Windows Media Player Library:

    msdt.exe /id WindowsMediaPlayerLibraryDiagnostic

Now, not all of them will run successfully.  Those that don't run successfully are not part of the current version of the troubleshooters.  Also after completing the repairs I had to run each troubleshooter so they could be reset.

Seems MS is retiring / migrating away from these and going to 'Get Help'.  The commands don't work anymore, and 'Get Help' isn't working on my PC.  Stuck between changes again that I didn't know about - yay!

How do I fix anything 'troubleshooter' related on a Win 11 25H2 PC at this transition.

    Hi again.....

I didn't know anyone had left replies, as I never received any notifications.

Anyways.....I tried running the administrator command prompt on each of those two commands and I got an error message along the lines of "The module 'mshml.dll' / 'shdocvw.dll was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterService was not found.  Make sure that 'mshml.dll' / 'shdocvw.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again."  So, no luck there.

So then I thought I'd have better luck with a clean installation.  Wrong again.  I attempted to do a clean install of Windows 11 using the latest Windows 11 media creation tool method  from Microsoft.  I only got so far and the installer stopped at a "Install driver to show hardware where to install Windows" error screen with no indication of what kind of driver is needed.

The couple of times I could get past the error message using the administrator command prompt (& no further) a screen popped up asking me what drive / partition I wanted to install Windows on.  That's not the strange part.  Below the question was a listing of the storage in the SSD drive and its partitions.  Now when I bought this laptop it had 512 Gb of storage available. Now I was being told I had only 45Gb on the SSD drive.

Does anyone have any more thoughts on what I can do after the two above suggestions getting me just more frustrated?

So, anyways I decided a couple of days back to use the reset option with the cloud based download of Windows.  Everything came back as it should EXCEPT all the trouble shooters will still not open or run.

Does anyone know what to do when you get the "Install driver to show hardware where to install Windows" error screen?  If I can get that part fixed I'm more than willing to do a clean installation of Windows 11.  I searched for solutions on the Internet and either my laptop didn't have the hardware or software required or in most cases the solutions didn't give enough details for me to know how to proceed.  The laptops details are are at the top of my first post in this string in case PC make or other details matter in getting this issue solved.

  • Since you already tried out all possible options but nothing worked, clean install is last option IMO.

You can run Command Prompt as an administrator, re-register the system DLL files, and then restart your computer.

Run Command Prompt as an administrator, execute the commands `regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll` and `regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll` to re-register the system DLL files, then restart your computer.
