Migrate CAP Devices from SfB to Teams
Hello,
we are migrating from SfB 2015 on-premises to Teams, which includes PSTN telephony.
The client wants the migration to be a long process for business reasons, so users in Sfb and users in Teams will have to coexist.
We have found that the customer has old CAP devices, not compatible with Teams.
The customer knows they have to buy new Teams-compatible CAP devices, but wants them have the same name. That is, if the device was called Room1 in SfB, it has to be called Room1 in Teams, because user call the device searching the name Room1.
1 - What is the proper procedure to migrate CAP devices from SfB to Teams?
For users the command Move-Csuser is used, but I do not find information for CAP devices.
I suppose that because the devices are not-compatibles, the only solution there will be:
- remove the old CAP device from Skype, how is it done?
- install the new CAP in Teams
2- can users moved to Teams call the old CAP devices from SfB? I mean SIP call (1 to 1) from SfB to Teams, not PSTN call
Thanks a lot for any information

- There is no way we can migrate the CAP accounts. We have done the below for the one of our customers.
1. Prepare a list of all CAP account with complete details.
2. Delete it from SFB - Refer https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/skype/remove-cscommonareaphone?view=skype-ps
3. Delete the accounts from AD and create it again with same details and let it sync to O365'
4. Assign CAP license and sign in to Teams Phone. - Deleted
Hi Elecktrus900,
This post was from a while back, did you find the info you need? If not, this might be useful. From a Jeff Schertz blog:
"You cannot migrate the accounts directly as Common Area Phone accounts in Skype for Business Server are AD contact objects, but in Teams an AD user object is needed. If you assign a Common Area Phone license to a user mailbox it will deactivate the mailbox so the best practice is to use a resource mailbox in Exchange Online for any accounts you wish to assign a CAP license. It is recommended to disable MFA on these types of accounts but you can still use some MFA solutions as the Android client does support some directly and others can be used with the “Sign in on a different device” method"
Hope this helps
