Sharing with Groups

In Sharepoint Online, when I go to share a site with a newly created group (24+ hours old), users who belong to that group still receive "Access Denied." The security group I'm trying to use is made up of 10 smaller groups, and it totals around 120,000 users. It appears in the directory. Users show in AD as being members of the group.

We have a group for the entire division (this is made up of 10 smaller groups) at 231,000+ users, and it works fine. Is there some kind of delay I'm not aware of because the group I'm using has so many members? This is really frustrating, because my group and the much larger group are identical from all appearances.

  • garnern2 I confirm Security Groups can also be added to SharePoint Groups to grant access to SharePoint resources.

Here's Microsoft official documentation which might help you: How are Azure AD Security Groups used?

The issue you are facing is maybe due to it is taking more time for sync. It may take up to 24 or 48 hours.

If it is taking more than 48 hours, you can create a support ticket with Microsoft.

Check this thread which might help you: Using security groups with Office 365 and SharePoint

garnern2 I don't think adding security groups in Microsoft 365 groups is supported. I had a similar issue before when a security group was added to SharePoint online access group, users showed up as being member of group but got access denied. Support engineer concluded that it was not a supported scenario.

Recently Microsoft announced support for nested Azure AD groups, It may be worth taking a look.  https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-entra-azure-ad-blog/create-quot-nested-quot-groups-with-azure-ad-dynamic-groups/ba-p/3118024

This isn't the issue. I can find the group I'm sharing with. I can also find one of the subgroups. I've shared with both, and it still doesn't allow access.

When you check access in SharePoint for a user part of the group or subgroup does it show up as them having access or no?
