garnern2 I confirm Security Groups can also be added to SharePoint Groups to grant access to SharePoint resources.

The issue you are facing is maybe due to it is taking more time for sync. It may take up to 24 or 48 hours.
If it is taking more than 48 hours, you can create a support ticket with Microsoft.
