Sharepoint online Security Groups dont work

I have a problem with Sharepoint online and security groups. I create the groups in the Office 365 Admin and assign the people.
Then I add the groups in Sharepoint. It all works. But now the users are not displayed when I check the permissions. This means you don't get permissions for these groups. What could be the reason?
- At the point you added the security group with those permissions on SharePoint, were some users already added to the security group?
What happens if you now add another user to the security group, leave it an hour or so, then check permissions for that user in SPO?
I've seen an issue a couple of months ago where the sync from Azure AD to SPO was somehow broken, which meant that changes to AAD group memberships were not seen in SPO, so existing users in the AAD group had access, but anyone new added, did not.
It took a ticket with MS and several days for them to get to the bottom of it.
