SharePoint Online - Site design removed from "Create site" menu?
Hi all,
In July our users were able to click "Create site" from one of our hub sites, choose "Team site" and select a custom site design from the dropdown:
This option has now been removed due to the update:
This leaves my users frustrated. They now need to wait for the site to provision, click settings and choose "Apply a site template" to apply the design...
The following article says: "The dropdown menu during the site creation process is no longer available. You can choose to apply a template immediately upon creating a site, either from the window that appears prompting you to apply a template or through Site settings > Apply site template."
Well, where is that option?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/apply-and-customize-sharepoint-site-templates-39382463-0e45-4d1b-be27-0e96aeec8398
Does any of you know how to get back this easy process of adding a site to a hub and choosing a template directly?
Thanks
Hey JoostvdLinden
As you say, this appears related to the switch they are making from Site Designs to Site Templates in terminology and also updating the UI to apply templates. I would raise a ticket but I suspect they are aware of this and have temporarily removed the integration at creation until they figure out a way to add it back in.

I can see this discussion was started in September 2021 but I am visiting in the year 2023 to check if this dropdown option, to select template white site creation, is disabled permanently?

The Site Designs have been moved to the Apply site templates features we have for a given site- JoostvdLindenBrass Contributor
This means that the end user should now wait for site provisioning and perform another few steps before the site template is applied? I find no advantage there.
Do you happen to know if I can replace the existing (default) "Team Site" template with our custom template? As mentioned here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/dev/declarative-customization/customize-default-site-design
