SharePoint Online - Site design removed from "Create site" menu?
- Sep 09, 2021
Hey JoostvdLinden
As you say, this appears related to the switch they are making from Site Designs to Site Templates in terminology and also updating the UI to apply templates. I would raise a ticket but I suspect they are aware of this and have temporarily removed the integration at creation until they figure out a way to add it back in.
The Site Designs have been moved to the Apply site templates features we have for a given site
This means that the end user should now wait for site provisioning and perform another few steps before the site template is applied? I find no advantage there.
Do you happen to know if I can replace the existing (default) "Team Site" template with our custom template? As mentioned here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/dev/declarative-customization/customize-default-site-design

Hey JoostvdLinden
Totally get the frustration, it's an odd choice and like I said, I suspect this is not intended to remain this way long term. Personally, I would suggest waiting a bit and working around the couple extra steps before you commit to updating the default site templates, but that's just what I would do, so take it with a grain of salt.- DavidFrancoeurOct 05, 2021Brass Contributor
JoostvdLinden I don't know if you saw this but a video just dropped on Site Templates and they do acknowledge some regressions happened that they are working to fix. Hope this helps.

DavidFrancoeur thanks for sharing these details! I really appreciate it.
I find it quite disturbing that they replace an existing feature which is GA, release a new replacement feature that doesn't even closely meet the existing functionality, and don't have a proper workaround in place.
For now I have replaced the built-in default Team Site with our custom script.
