SharePoint on line but using desktop software
Hi,
Hope someone can help me please?
We are mostly using Office 2013 on our pc's and I have just currently created a share point on line for all our company data,
Here is the problem, All I want it to do is when one person opens a file then someone else cannot. Just like it was when I had the files on my own data file server.
Can this only be done on Office 2016????
Its just it will let 2 people open it and save it and then I get 2 versions and you do not know which one is up to date. Or they both can be.
Hope someone can assist me.

You need to have your users check out the file (so that they will be the only user making edits). When the file is checked out the other users cannot access it. When the user is finished editing, save the changes and check the file back in. This way, 1 file is shared by all and they are all accessing the same data and changes. When the file is checked back in, the next person can then proceed to checkout and make there changes.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Cathy, that's a great pointer as I didn't know you could do that but that is for using share point on line. I mean if using the file location synced to your desk top pc.
I didn't make it clear, I'm sorry.
