SharePoint Migration Tool after failed copying

Hi,

a user tried to migrate a local storage to SharePoint Online. He set up a sync between his Windows Explorer and the SharePoint library and did a plain copy of all folders & files from the network storage to the synced library.

Now not all files or folders arrived on SharePoint but he already started to worked in the synced folder.

Can I re-migrate fromn the network drive to SharePoint with the SPMT and keep the newer versions of the files? If so, how do I have to set up the SPMT?

Thx and best regards

    Hi Kevin (@kevinbull1720),

The reason the original script isn't seeing your existing SharePoint files is twofold:

    1. Path Resolution: Get-PnPFile requires the exact server-relative URL (e.g., /sites/yoursite/Shared Documents/...). If you pass "Documents/..." (display name) or omit the site path, SharePoint returns a 404. Because -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue was used, it returned $null, treating every file as missing/new.
    2. Upload Cmdlet: The original script also used Copy-PnPFile (which only works within SharePoint) instead of Add-PnPFile (for uploading local/file-share files).

I've rewritten the script to fix this and address your empty subfolders:

    • Pre-indexes SPO (UseIndexCache = $true): Caches your SharePoint library inventory in memory once, making comparisons instant and eliminating API throttling/path lookup errors.
    • Empty Subfolder Sync (SyncEmptyDirectories = $true): Recreates any missing or empty subfolder structures left behind by Migration Manager.
    • Auto-resolves URLs: Dynamically detects the server-relative path whether you pass "Documents" or "Shared Documents".
    • Correct Uploads: Uses Add-PnPFile and compares timestamps in UTC.

Hi HaidariHammad I know this post is a couple of years old but I am trying to use your script to help me sync files between an on premise file server and sharepoint online.  The problem I have is I have already used the Microsoft Migration Manager to do a migration but some of the subfolders are empty and I was hoping to use your script to compare between the file share and sharepoint.  At the moment it is not seeing the existing files on sharepoint and therefore is copying new files.  I have tried putting your script through AI to help but it doesn't.  Any thoughts please?  Many thanks.

If items are already modified/newer in SharePoint Online, you have a few options:

Third party tools could be the easiest option as it has built-in "Copy if newer (incremental)" feature that preserves newer versions at the destination while migrating missing content.

If you don't want to purchase third party tools, you can achieve the same functionality using PowerShell with PnP module The PowerShell solution will:

    • Compare file timestamps between source and destination
    • Only copy files missing from SharePoint
    • Only update files that are older in SharePoint
    • Skip files that are newer in SharePoint
    • Maintain full folder structure

    To use this script:

Modify these parameters in the script:

    • SourcePath: Your network share path
    • SharePointSiteUrl: Your SharePoint site URL
    • LibraryName: Your document library name
    • WhatIf: Set to $false to perform actual copy
    • BatchSize: Adjust based on your needs (lower for slower connections)
    • Run the script as Administrator:

    .\SharePoint-IncrementalSync.ps1

This way you can protect the work already done in SharePoint while completing the migration of remaining content from your network drive. Let me know if you'd like me to provide the PowerShell script.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Yes, you can re-migrate from the network drive to SharePoint Online using the SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) and ensure that the newer versions of the files in SharePoint are preserved.

While the current version of SPMT does not directly offer incremental migration for brand-new tasks, there are options available to achieve a similar outcome. Specifically, you can use the “Migrate files created after” and “Migrate files modified after” filters in SPMT settings. These options allow you to migrate only files that were created or updated after a specific date, effectively performing an incremental migration.

If you already have an existing migration session saved, check it to see if you can run an incremental migration from there. This might save you time and ensure that only the missing or updated files are migrated.

Here’s how you can set it up:

    1. Open the SharePoint Migration Tool and set up the migration source (network drive) and destination (SharePoint library).
    2. In the migration settings, enable the “Migrate files created after” or “Migrate files modified after” filters and provide an appropriate date.
    3. Save and run the migration task.

This will allow SPMT to skip files already updated or present in SharePoint and migrate only the necessary changes.

      Hi HaidariHammad ,

thank you for the reply. Unfortunately it's the other way round: the user worked on the files on SharePoint not on the network drive.
So I need to keep/protect the files on SharePoint and migrate the rest from network.

Imho your suggested settings migrates only th files from the network which were created/modified after the specified date. This should overwrite newer files on SPO.
