Requesting Clarity on Get a Link
I need to just grab a copy of a link to a particular document in a Group SharePoint library and send it to another user.
I could tell them to go to the library and look in this folder, etc, but I really just want to send them directly where they need to go.
Is selecting the "restricted link" the best way to accomplish this?

Yes, it is.
A restricted link does not instantiate any new permission, does not break inheritance and is not an invite. It is just a direct link to the item, and to be precise it is a durable link (https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/wbaer/2015/09/22/durable-links-in-sharepoint-server-2016-it-preview/)

To expand on Salvatore's answer, the "restricted" link will work for anyone who already has permission to the document. If you know that the person already has access, then you can go ahead and copy that restricted link immediately. Hope that helps!

I agree that this is annoying. In old versions of on premise you could just right click the document link and use IE's context menu to copy shortcut and paste in an email. The Get a Link feature seems cumbersome.
