Technically, in my opinion its not out of the realm of possibility, though might push some boundaries. You'd have to do some serious thinking through designing the solution (its not a dump everything in one folder kinda of solution) and how you want search and security to work. While not the same size (individual documents), we are storing millions of documents in SharePoint Online with no noticeable performance hindrance.
- Agree with Brent here, a single SPO document library can store up to 30 million of documents with no performance problems
