Modern Document Library and PDFs

We have a doucment library with PDF documents which contain embedded links in them. If you open the document library in the new experience then the document opens as an image and doesnt allow links to be clicked. If you revert back to classic SharePoint then it opens the PDF document correctly.

Is there a list of known issues with the new experience to cross check issues against?

This is a known item within Office 365 / SP Online. In the modern document libraries, you cannot override using Word Online as the default app to open .pdf extension. If you look on Uservoice, it's a common ask to allow this to be changed.

Absolutely ridiculous. This just bit us too. We thought we knew most of the implications for going with Modern Libraries. Who in their right mind would have thought that we needed to test embedded links inside of a PDF document when we are looking at switching to Modern Libraries?

This doesn't seem to impact all links...anyone know which ones it won't allow to link from the preview? I have a PDF document with mail and web links that doesn't work and I created a new Word document today with mail and web links and saved to the same library and it DOES work from the preview.

I am seeing the same issue with a client that is using O365 with BlueBeam. When they are in the Modern View, the item doesn't open with their default program, when switching to classic, the behavior looks at the default program and that is what they prefer. Any one have any luck with the modern library exp?

  • I'm getting the same behaviour. These are the steps:

    1. create new team site

    2. create a word document with a url

    3. save the document as a pdf.

    4. upload it to the library in the team site.

    5. open the document.

and now in the below screenshot I cannot clikc the link:

      Hi Peter,

Thats is correct. If you switch your view to Classic SharePoint and open the same PDF then you can click on the URL.

Does anyone from MS team know what the viewer is from Peters screenshot?

      Hi Juan,

Its not that the files are not opening, its the application in which they are opening. For some reason the Modern View is treating the PDF file as an image whereas the classic view opens the PDF.

Could it be that the PDF you are trying to open is encrypted? so the browser can not read it fine?
