Microsoft Search Question using SharePoint and File Share Connector

Hello,

It is my understanding that when using Microsoft Search as it comes out of the box, when you run a search it is supposed to show results from ALL content sources connected, showing results from each source in a result cluster (at least that is what I am reading and what most of the MS Marketing videos I have looked at seem to show).  My experience, however, seems that results are always based on the default results source in the system, which is  Local SharePoint Results (yet I thought that the Microsoft Search uses the All vertical by default?).   Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Specifically, in my environment I have created a content source using the MS Graph File Share connector, which is indexing properly and does return results.   I have also created a vertical for it.  But when I go to use Microsoft Search and enter a value that I know returns data from the connector source, initially I get no results (using the Microsoft Search field).  I have to actually click on the vertical that I created for the connector data source and then I get results.

Shouldn't the default Microsoft Search return results from ALL sources initially, and then you can use the defined verticals to actually trim down those results?  Am I missing something here?

Thanks for any insight ...

  • yes, by default, Microsoft Search should return results from all content sources connected to it. The search results should be organized into clusters based on the content source they come from. However, it is possible that the search configuration in your environment is not set up to return results from all sources by default.

To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following:

Check the Microsoft Search configuration: Verify that all content sources are connected and configured properly. You can do this by going to the Microsoft Search Admin Center and checking the "Content Sources" page.

Check the default vertical: Verify that the "All" vertical is selected as the default vertical. You can do this by going to the Microsoft Search Admin Center and checking the "Verticals" page.

Check the search scope: Verify that the search scope is set to "All" or "Everything." You can do this by performing a search and checking the search scope in the search box.

Test the search: Try performing a search using a term that you know should return results from the content source you created. If you still don't see results from the content source, try clicking on the vertical you created to see if the results appear there.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may want to reach out to Microsoft support for further assistance.

    I hope this helps!

Deleted -- Thanks for responding so quickly.  I checked your suggesstions and all appear to be set up correctly and working ...

Check the Microsoft Search configuration -- I did not see a "Content Sources" page -- only a Data Sources tab ... and the only "Data Source" shown here is my custom connector one

Check the default vertical: -- Shows all the standard out of the box ones plus my custom one

Check the search scope -- when I run a search, by default it returns results via 'All' which shows no results

But if I simply click on the OnPrem File Share vertical I do now get results -- I would have expected these to appear under All in a cluster associated with the OnPrem File Share content source, correct?

      Did I miss anything?

Check the content sources configuration to ensure that the custom connector is properly associated with the "All" vertical.
Review the search results display settings to ensure that the results from your custom connector are being properly grouped and displayed in the search results page.
Consider creating a separate vertical for your custom connector to ensure that the results are being properly displayed and avoid any issues with the "All" vertical
