Managed metadata column strange behavior

Hi There,

This week I started to update a lot of records in our document library and I noticed the column behavior is changed. Before, when I started to type something in a metadata column it searched as I typed for example:

If I started to type "Ap" it started to list all the metadata starting with Ap like: Application, Apple, Apero etc.
Now it is ridiculously annoying because if I start to type now it automatically selects the first record in the list starting with A (Apero) and the time by I would type "Appl" Apero is already selected so I typed Aperoppl.

Maybe it is a browser problem but it is super annoying. Anyone has the same problem?

  • UPDATE!
On one of my tenants is working again as expected.

    Issue ID: SP1038113
    Affected services: SharePoint Online
    Status: Service degradation
    Issue type: Advisory
Start time: Mar 13, 2025, 19:26 PM CET

    User impact
Users' SharePoint Online column filter is not working as expected.

    More info
When filling out the list/library column filter text box after typing the first letter the first matching term automatically auto-fills, requiring the users to delete the auto-fill if they want to select another term. It also affects Managed Metadata / Taxonomy columns.

    Scope of impact
Impact is specific to some users who are served through the affected infrastructure.

    Root cause
A regression in the filter pane component is causing impact to occur.

    Current status
    Mar 21, 2025, 11:09 AM CET
We've determined that a regression in the filter pane component is causing impact to occur. We've created a fix which we expect to deploy by Friday, March 21, 2025 and estimate to complete by Sunday, March 30, 2025.
    Estimated time to resolve:
    Sunday, March 30, 2025

We have the same problem, basically can't use sharepoint the way we work. Work around via "Term picker" worked last week but not today. MS needs to fix this immediately

When in SharePoint then it works for me today. Issue still remains in Teams.

You are not alone and I created an MS ticket for this as we are flooded with tickets.

I really hope they reverse this as in this form the metadata column is unusable. I have hundreds of options in each metadata columns. Some of them contains close to a thousand. I don't know who thought this auto selection is a good idea but I would force him to update records in our libraries just for a day and ask him at the end of the day if he is still sane...

  • Yes, you're not alone—several SharePoint Online users have reported this issue recently. It seems like Microsoft changed the behavior of the Managed Metadata (Term Store) column autocomplete functionality. Instead of allowing you to continue typing while filtering the results dynamically, it now aggressively auto-selects the first match, making it difficult to type longer terms accurately.

    Possible Workarounds:

    • Use the Term Picker
      • Instead of typing, click on the tag icon next to the metadata field. This will open the full term picker where you can search and select the correct term manually.

    • Try a Different Browser
      • Some users reported that using a different browser (like Edge instead of Chrome) temporarily resolved the issue.

    • Use Copy-Paste
      • A workaround is to type your desired term in Notepad (or elsewhere) and then paste it into the field.

Sorry but this is not working in a proper metadata column where hundreds or thousands of options stored in the DB.

Unfortunately, our impacted list of terms is too long to navigate to with the Term Picker in the "Edit all" form. We use Edge as a default, but still happening in Chrome. Copy-Paste is the only resolution for our tenant. 3/24 issue still occurring in our tenant.

I am having the same issue, specifically when trying to enter in a keyword. The issue just started today.

Customer of mine is experiencing the same problems. Do we have the option to revert to the old functionality?

Having the same issue today. Tested the browser, incognito, autofill, different list in a different site and still having the same issue.

  • Yes I'm seeing the same thing on my end. This change is super unhelpful and makes entering managed metadata a giant PITA. Microsoft needs to revert back to the previous method or at least provide an option to use one method or the other.

A non-ideal workaround I've found is if you put a space in front of whatever you want to type, then type a complete first word and then delete the space character you have a bit more control over it. Again, not a solution just a temporary fix.
