Yes, you're not alone—several SharePoint Online users have reported this issue recently. It seems like Microsoft changed the behavior of the Managed Metadata (Term Store) column autocomplete functionality. Instead of allowing you to continue typing while filtering the results dynamically, it now aggressively auto-selects the first match, making it difficult to type longer terms accurately.
Possible Workarounds:
- Use the Term Picker
- Instead of typing, click on the tag icon next to the metadata field. This will open the full term picker where you can search and select the correct term manually.
- Try a Different Browser
- Some users reported that using a different browser (like Edge instead of Chrome) temporarily resolved the issue.
- Use Copy-Paste
- A workaround is to type your desired term in Notepad (or elsewhere) and then paste it into the field.

Sorry but this is not working in a proper metadata column where hundreds or thousands of options stored in the DB.

Unfortunately, our impacted list of terms is too long to navigate to with the Term Picker in the "Edit all" form. We use Edge as a default, but still happening in Chrome. Copy-Paste is the only resolution for our tenant. 3/24 issue still occurring in our tenant.
