Links in Document Web Parts are downloaded

Spoiler

I have created a link in a doc lib (in modern team sites), and it works if I'm in the library: the linked source opens directly.
However, it does not work if I'm on the homepage, using the document library web part. When I click the link, IE asks if I'd like to Save the link.

This issue is solved, but it is important to know that you must use the "Name (linked to document with edit menu)" column. Because with the other "Name" columns the link in the web part doesn't work.

I'm having this issue as well - it's very frustrating. We have a Resources library with both PDFs and links to external websites.

We'll have to just add a quick links web part for links and then just use the Resources library for documents until this is fixed.

  • Yeah it appears this is an issue (?) with the Document Library web part - it treats these links like any other file, so clicking on them commences a download.

It is possible to create a set of links in a list, then use the 'List' web part to display them. clicking thee links opens the target web site as expected.

See: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/SharePoint/Modern-Communication-sites-display-links-issue/m-p/151029#M13734 for a bit of a clearer explanation

We are experiencing the same behavior on our tenant as well. We tried to use the OWA link to mitigate this behavior but no success. This needs to be fixed...
