Issues with SharePoint File Viewer

Earlier this month, we started noticing the paging arrows within the SharePoint File Viewer are randomly disappearing either when paging through documents and/or after adding / updating the metadata for that document. We are reaching out to see if anyone else had experienced this issue.  Below are the steps of what we've been able to reproduce the issue.  The reproducibility of the issue hasn't been consistent -- sometime the arrows disappear while other times it works as expected.

  1. 1. Go to the SharePoint Library / Folder containing multiple files (PDF, Word, Excel etc)
  2. 2. Click on a document
  3. 3. Click 'View File Details' (if not open)
  4. 4. Modify the document metadata in the details pane
  5. 5. Hit Enter*

* Paging arrow may disappear although there are more documents to page / view to.

What we should we expect to see

What we shouldn't expect to see after updating the metadata.

Until Microsoft fixes the viewer state, the least disruptive workaround is to stop editing metadata inside the File Viewer. Return to the library, use Edit in grid view or the library details pane to change the columns, save the row, and then open the document for viewing. That keeps navigation and metadata editing in separate page states, so the viewer does not have to rebuild its filtered result set after every change.

For the support case, test one clean library with three files and one view whose filter depends on the edited column. Record whether the arrows disappear when the edit causes the current file to leave the view, when it remains in the view, or in both cases. Include the view URL, column type, browser version, UTC time, and the page correlation ID.

If the arrow disappears, close the viewer and reopen the current view rather than using Back repeatedly. The reports from several tenants make a local browser repair unlikely; a minimal filtered-view reproduction should help Microsoft identify whether the regression is in result-set refresh or the viewer navigation control.

We are having this issue as well.  Noticed about a month ago or so, maybe earlier.  We have a support case and showed the engineer it wasn't just the library where the user's noticed it for two views; we made a new library with him and created a view with a filter.  When the user changes the metadata that matches the view criteria, the left and right arrows disappear.  This is a change; we've used the real library's views for at least six years and never saw this.

We noticed this issue back in May/June and opened a ticket with Microsoft. They say it is resolved, but still comes back now and then.  It really slows our processes down.

Same issue, consistently happens after changing some of the data. Any fix?

I haven't heard of any fix yet.  I am hopeful soon as it is slowing us down.

  • I have noticed some inconsistencies throughout the years as well. Honestly, don't use this web part much due to poor rendering on SharePoint pages (frame within a frame) + taking up too much real estate.
