Issues with SharePoint File Viewer

A little more information on the issue -- we are now noticing the next/previous buttons in the SharePoint file viewer, are disappearing shortly after entering metadata while using the custom / filtered view.  In our case, due to the amount of content in the library, we created a custom view that filters down to documents with missing ICNs so we can get those metadata entered.  This is where we started experiencing issues because of the custom / filtered views.  If we went back to the default view, we don't seem to experience any issues.  I was informed by Microsoft Support that this was an expected behavior but if the functionality had been working for a while, then what changed recently?
