Can you please confirm whether the issue is happening with the site navigation links (left or top navigation menus) or with links inside a page, such as those added through the Quick Links web part?

SharePoint behaves differently depending on the feature or web part being used, and the ability to open links in a new tab varies.

I’m not fully sure which area you’re referring to, so it would help to know exactly where the links are located. The behavior depends on where the links are coming from.

    • Navigation links > Can be configured to open in a new tab
    • Quick Links web part > Microsoft recently added a checkbox to open in a new tab
    • Hero web part > Can be configured to open in a new tab
    • Document library links > SharePoint controls this behavior and often forces same‑tab opening
    • Teams/SharePoint integration links > Usually forced into same tab

If my post solved your issue or answered your query, please mark it as a Solution and give it a Like.

I am unfamilar with sharepoint's features but I'd have to guess it's the document library links.

I believe that if it’s just a link, it was most likely added through the Quick Links web part or the site navigation. In both of these areas, you should see an option to open the link in a new tab, as long as you have edit permissions on the page or you are a site owner.
