Hitting return from PDF changes URL but not site?

Hey everyone,

We have been having issues with our PDFs on SPO.

When users open a PDF from a document library, and then try to return (using the return arrow in the browser) it doesn't return them to the library. Instead the URL changes to the library, but the site/pdf page remains. Hitting return again then takes you back to the homepage. It seems like the page doesn't register the URL change for the library.

Hitting "close" in the PDF does nothing.

We have tried different sites, different browsers and resetting browsers, but it's the same. It only works shortly if you upload a new PDF, then suddenly you are able to return and close correctly, but when you restart the browser same thing happens again (also with the resently uploaded PDF).

Have any of you run into the same issue? We are unsure if its a "us" problem or a "Microsoft" problem.

Thanks!

Mia

  • MiaPil I just tried this on SharePoint site and I am unable to reproduce this issue.

It works fine for me. I can close the PDF file using close (x) button at top right corner as well as when I click on browser back arrow, it takes me to document library on first click.

Only you are facing this issue or all users? If only you, try clearing browser cache/cookies once. If all users are facing the same issue, raise support ticket with Microsoft: Get support for Microsoft 365 - Online support

Hey thank you for you response! It helps me a lot.

It's more than just me who are experiencing the issue, but it's very helpful to know that you are not, since I can now narrow it down to our organisation. But I will definitely check up on how widespread this issue is, to see if its something with the users or the sharepoint site...and then probably contact microsoft support to get help.
      • MiaPil Sure, that makes sense. Try on different SharePoint sites in same M365 tenant (team site, communication site).

Also check on SharePoint sites from other M365 tenants if you have access to any.
