Fileshare migration
Hi
As the MS SharePoint Migration Assessment Tool (SMAT) only works for SP Farms.
What to use (to identify any file "issues") when it is lots of Fileshares that needs to be migrated to SPO?
The SharePoint Migration tool - can this make a scan only and create reports without actual migrate?

We use the SPMT (SharePoint Migration Tool) from Microsoft. And it does in fact scan file shares - you can even set the preferred method to scan first (and then choose not to commence the actual migration).

Yes - we can just scan using the SPMT as Henrik mentioned - Just on the last screen - click the gear icon to see your options. But I have personally had much better experience using 3rd party tools(the likes of ShareGate, Metalogix etc) to get better insights scanning large file repositories!
Hi BAT MAN. The free trial of http://www.thinkscape.com/SharePoint-Online-File-Migration-Tool/ when migrating to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Files To Go provides a CSV report listing the issues before the migration commences.

- Unfortunately the SharePoint Migration Tool does not provide a pre-scan of a file share...you have some reports, but only when you have done the migration: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointmigration/using-the-sharepoint-migration-tool-reports. It's true that the tool do a scanning before trying to upload the files to SPO, but I think it's not enough for what you need. So for doing the prescan you will need to go to third party tools and use the trial version with the risk you will not have a full pre-scan of your file share
