Communications Sites web parts audience

Hi - seems like Communications sites web parts (and maybe modern team sites) do not have the ability to target content using audiences - is this what others experience?

thanks

  • AFAIK, default modern WebParts provided by Microsoft do not incorporate the option of setting up audiences

this is a classic SharePoint features, I really thing we are going to have to begin seperating our thinking... if you want those traditional SharePoint func stay classic, if you want the new hotness interfaces and simplisic user/admin experience go modern

The bigger question IMO is why doesnt Microsoft consider something like that "worthy" to go into Modern. Is this something on the backlog or (more likely) they've picked to deprecate. I'd like to see that roadmap be a little more clear.

they would use telemetry and see it's not used a great deal

I have not tried that yet, but we have been limiting the use of Audiences because of the lack of control over their compilation. In SPOnline, they only get compiled once a week and you don't know when it has happened until you do a bunch of trial and error (:.

You can still audience web parts effectively in SPO using SP Security Groups, these do not require compilation, or not that I have experienced any delay in their application to the web part.

My requirement makes use of audiencing so I had hoped Communications sites and modern web parts would support my need - back to boring old publishing then!

Thanks, i had forgotten about that option.
  • Also, setting audience filtering on the source library does not enable the setting in the web part...and if you remove permissions to the source library for a user but still have the web part deployed to a page - the page says you do not have access...
