Column default values for Person/group

I have a document library with multiple folders. Each folder is a department, and inside the folders are the controlled documents for that department.

 

I need a way to automatically tag any new documents in these folders with a default approver... but (of course) Microsoft only has SOME of the column types set up for having default values. 

 

Anyone have a workaround for this? My plan was to create a workflow that picked up the approver via an "Approver" column... but if it can't be filled in automatically, I've hit ANOTHER dead end.

    Just putting this here in case someone else is running into the same roadblock:

    Instead of folders, I switched to document sets... you still can't technically have a default setting for the column... but you CAN set it up as a shared column and have that column synchronized. I set the document set up with the Approver, and now all the documents within it are set to the same person. Close enough.
