Changing Modern Site Icons

Diving into creation of a new Sharepoint Online Site for our company.

Trying to stick with ‘Modern’ elements everywhere I can, and am learning a lot.  Want to see who far I can get in branding/customizing the site completely out-of-the-box.

Home page will be the default ‘Classic’ page I got from creation of site collection, which is using promoted links for navigation to other sites,  Icons for promoted links are also intended to be the site icons for the ones they navigate to.

Changing site icon for classic sites is easy enough from 'Look and Feel' in setting, change to group Icon can be done from Outlook online, but I found no obvious way to change site icons for Modern Sites.  Perhaps I am just missing the obvious someplace.

I was able to do it by replacing the default __siteIcon__.jpg file in Site Assets with the custom one.  So this is ‘a way’ that works, but is it ‘the way’ I should do it.

  • You should be able to change group icons from outlook on the web, which should then sync to the teamsite.
This worked before. Now it doesn't. It's bugged. You can look up my other thread about this.

  • Just to make sure I understand--if I'm still on hosted Exchange (haven't been transitioned to Outlook online) I'm unable to change the icon for a modern team site?

Has anyone figured this out yet?

I have seveal team sites I would like to change the icon on. I tried to replace the file, didn't work. I tried to change the icon on the group in owa, it shows it changed there but not on the site.
