Open MS Project file in Project Plan 3

Hello,

My company is switching over to the online Plan 3 version of Project. Some folks in our company still have MS Project on their computers. Is there anyway to open a .mpp file from my computer or my OneDrive using the online version plan 3?

I was given Plan 3 but only see the ability to start a new plan or open a plan shared with me.

Thank you,

Sara

  • Sara_Katz For starters, are you using MS Project Online (MSPO) or Project for the Web (PFTW)?

If you are using MSPO there are different versions of MSP Desktop.  One will connect to MSPO and the other will not.  Your org may need to update the version you're using and reinstall MSP on everyone's machine.

If you're using PFTW, I'd recommend you review the feature availability for each license type in the link below as there are differences between what a Plan 1 and Plan 3 license can do.

Here is a summary of the differences.  Also a Plan 1 license does not get an install of MSP desktop software.

Can I export to MPP file format from Project Plan 3 ?

  • Sara --

From your description, it sounds like you are using Project for the Web (newly named Planner Premium). If this is the case, you cannot open an MPP file in Project for the Web, but you can import an MPP file as a Project for the Web project. On the Project Home page, click the +New Plan button. In the Create dialog, click the Import Project as Plan button. In the Import from Project Desktop dialog, click the Choose .mpp file button, locate the project, and open it. WARNING: You will lose all of the resources in the project during the import process, along with any features that are not currently supported in Project for the Web.

Also, you DO NOT need Project Plan 3 to use Project for the Web. That subscription is meant for users of the Microsoft Project desktop application. If you do not need the Microsoft Project desktop app, I would recommend you downgrade to the Project Plan 1 subscription, which is the only subscription you need to use Project for the Web.

    Hope this helps.

Dale_HowardMVP Thank you for the reply. I was able to import an mpp. All of my coworkers still have MS Project Desktop application and when I requested it from my IT department, they provided me with plan 3. I honestly wish I had the desktop app because this seems different than the desktop app

      Thanks,

      Sara
