Open MS Project file in Project Plan 3
- May 01, 2024
Sara_Katz For starters, are you using MS Project Online (MSPO) or Project for the Web (PFTW)?
If you are using MSPO there are different versions of MSP Desktop. One will connect to MSPO and the other will not. Your org may need to update the version you're using and reinstall MSP on everyone's machine.
If you're using PFTW, I'd recommend you review the feature availability for each license type in the link below as there are differences between what a Plan 1 and Plan 3 license can do.

Here is a summary of the differences. Also a Plan 1 license does not get an install of MSP desktop software.Feature Category Feature Plan 1 Plan 3 Project, task, and time management Task History No Yes Collaboration and Agile Task Conversations Yes1 Yes1 Advanced Resource and Schedule management Advanced Dependencies View only Yes Roadmaps View only Yes Critical path No Yes Assignments View No Yes Create resource requests2 View only Yes Accept a booking proposal2 View only Yes Use Project with custom tables5 5 15 Power Automate Workflows and Business Process Flows6 Define Power Automate Business Process flows that utilize Project data including custom tables and columns. From your description, it sounds like you are using Project for the Web (newly named Planner Premium). If this is the case, you cannot open an MPP file in Project for the Web, but you can import an MPP file as a Project for the Web project. On the Project Home page, click the +New Plan button. In the Create dialog, click the Import Project as Plan button. In the Import from Project Desktop dialog, click the Choose .mpp file button, locate the project, and open it. WARNING: You will lose all of the resources in the project during the import process, along with any features that are not currently supported in Project for the Web.
Also, you DO NOT need Project Plan 3 to use Project for the Web. That subscription is meant for users of the Microsoft Project desktop application. If you do not need the Microsoft Project desktop app, I would recommend you downgrade to the Project Plan 1 subscription, which is the only subscription you need to use Project for the Web.
Hope this helps.
Dale_HowardMVP Thank you for the reply. I was able to import an mpp. All of my coworkers still have MS Project Desktop application and when I requested it from my IT department, they provided me with plan 3. I honestly wish I had the desktop app because this seems different than the desktop app
Thanks,
Sara

- Sara_KatzMay 01, 2024Copper ContributorI was told by my IT I was assigned an 0365 Online Project Plan 3, which should be available in your 0365 suite. I do not have any version of MSP Desktop.
- Sara_KatzMay 01, 2024Copper ContributorThank you for the insight. I went back to my O365 Account and saw the Plan 3 subscription and that the Project app was now available to me to install. I now have the Desktop app installed and the Plan 3 subscription applied.
