Outlook 365 suddenly won't open
Hello; Outlook worked this morning, now it won't open, says to open in Safe Mode, but that doesn't work, tries to open for 5 seconds than nothing. Restarted PC and no help. Please advise! Steven F 603

Steven_F_603 Same issue here, have a ticket with MS and expecting a call shortly.

They said it was not a result of patching, but rather something else that happened at the same time. They said it will be fixed without any interaction needed.Just wanted to share!

Justin Gallagher thx for the link!
I'm a bit doubtful on the 'it will fix itself' statement. I'm sure that could be true for unmanaged consumer devices, but for devices that are managed through Intune/ConfigMgr shouldn't fix themselves as that would mean Microsoft is making changes to the client around the managed update process...
Unless the issue is related to the O365 tenant, but in my case I have 2 devices in my home lab within the same tenant, both installed the July patches and 1 has the issue, the other doesn't.- Justin GallagherCopper Contributor
They mentioned it on the July Security Briefing call, but they would not give many details except for it was not related to the July Patches. They made it sound like it was at a higher level than the endpoints. So I was thinking tenant or azure level. I know we have been fighting with issues in excel and ATP settings that show the same behavior, but its a different issue.

Same problem here and the only update I had today was BitDefender AntiVirus.

Same issue in Sacramento CA this morning ... thanks for doing this on tax day microsoft - very helpful 😞

Steven_F_603Exact same problem here. Did a system restore to before today's update and Outlook still won't open. Sometimes it gets as far as "Processing", but then shuts down. Going to try repairing, then reinstalling Outlook as next steps. Bobavery1

Steven_F_603 I gather from other threads that the overnight update to Windows 10 has wreaked havoc with Outlook 365 and other offline versions of Outlook. It sure would be nice if Microsoft was proactive in letting people know about this and when the fix will occur. Lots of people, including me, have tried various kinds of fixes, some of which were undoubtedly destructive.

Steven_F_603 I was able to resolve by removing the problematic Windows update as per https://blog.lan-tech.ca/2020/07/15/outlook-fails-to-start/

RobWill_19 I don't have this update to uninstall and I still have the same problem as the others. I did reinstall all Microsoft products and can only open Outlook in Safe Mode. Thanks.

DebarahWilson You can try the version rollback as suggested in this thread or as in the "Update" note on the blog article I referenced there is a fix being pushed out and you may just have to close and re-open Outlook.

Hi Steven_F_603 .
Same problem here. Because of the problem I uninstalled the two updates that were loaded today and I am now able to launch outlook 365, but only in safe mode. In normal mode Outlook will not start. I also deactivated all add-ins, but that showed no changes in behaviuor, so I will keep using Outlook in safe mode until this is fixed.

Yes - I am too. It worked perfectly until an hour ago, and now will only load in SafeMode. Steven_F_603

Steven_F_603 Same issue here.
Some info regarding my pc:
Windows 10 v1909 Build 18363.959
Installed today:
- KB4565633 (2020-07 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 version 1909 for x64)
- KB4565554 (2020-07 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems)
- KB4565483 (2020-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems)
I'm uninstalling KB4565483 now as that one does list "Updates to improve security when using Microsoft Office products." in the highlights.

I just removed the update that supposedly "improves outlook security" and I am back up and running. Just wasted the last few hours trying to fix this. Wish microsoft would go back to the old way of doing updates and let us decide how and when to implement Andy D'Hollander

I was having issues; checked for updates; updated; still having issues. It opens then immediately disappears... Has anyone figured out a solution?

I've tried creating a new Outlook Profile, No success. I've now uninstalled all but the Security Update KB4565554. Still doesn't work. Andy D'Hollander
