Locked out of Device. In need of assistance.
You are not necessarily locked out permanently, but the new Microsoft account cannot verify or replace the original account linked to the Windows profile. The password, PIN and verification methods must belong to the account shown on the Windows sign-in screen.
First, try the cached Windows password:
- Disconnect the laptop from Wi-Fi and unplug any network cable.
- On the sign-in screen, select Sign-in options.
- Choose the password icon instead of the PIN icon.
- Enter the password originally used when the laptop was configured.
- If that password was recently changed online, try the previous password while the laptop remains offline.
If this works:
- Back up all important files immediately.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Add the Microsoft account that you intend to use, or create a local account.
- Select the new user, choose Change account type, and set it to Administrator.
- Sign in to the new administrator account and confirm that the files are available before removing the original profile.
If offline sign-in fails, use Microsoft’s official recovery process for the original account:
- Check whether the account is still signed in on another trusted computer, phone or browser.
- If an active session exists, open the account security settings and add a verification method that you can access.
- If none of the listed verification methods are available, select I don’t have any of these when that option appears.
- Follow the private account recovery prompts provided by Microsoft.
- Be aware that replacing security information may result in a 30-day waiting period.
Adding a passkey or resetting the password does not automatically remove a separate suspicious-activity verification requirement. Microsoft Support also cannot bypass the verification process without confirming account ownership. Do not post account or recovery details in the community.
Use Windows reset only as the final option:
- On the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Select Keep my files, not Remove everything.
- Stop if Windows requests a BitLocker recovery key that is unavailable.
Keep my files removes applications and settings but is intended to retain personal files. A clean Windows installation erases the drive, so do not continue until the BitLocker status and recovery key are known.
