What actually shows up in "Shared With Me"?

Is there any kind of formal explanation as to what actually shows up in "Shared With Me" for a user's OneDrive for Business account?  How it is determined?

I'm not really sure how to explain to users who don't see things that have been clearly shared with them by another user.  I just have to direct them to go to that user's actual OneDrive URL to see the files.

  • I cannot point you to an "official" explanation, if this is what you are looking for. Nevertheless, I will try to give an unofficial explanation...

The items that show up in "Shared With Me" for a given user are determined by means of a query. They are all, and only, the items which have been explicitly shared with that user, i.e. those for which that user is explicitly listed in their permissions.

Did you see this yet, though it doesn't mention OneDrive

See files others have shared with you

"The Shared (on Mac and iOS) or Shared with me (on Android or Windows Desktop) view lets you see the files others have shared with you. After you’re invited into the document, that document will automatically appear in the Shared or Shared with Me list. Office will try to show you more relevant shared documents at the top of the list."

So Office Graph is used I assume to surface the most interesting documents for users, including those that haven't been shared directly but have been granted access via permissions I think.
