Teams messaging restrictions: Hierarchy of who can message who
Hi team!
Question, is it possible to allow certain user to message or not message other users?
Example: we have 4 levels in our org chart, and we'd like users to talk to their manager, instead of going over that persons' head. This happens all the time and is a productivity destroyer.
Could it be setup that:
Level 1 users: Can message Level 2
Level 2: Can message Level 3 and 4
Level 3: Can message Level 4
(just an example).
Thanks heaps!
Manuel
Hi ManuelSiegrist,
within Microsoft Teams, messaging policies serve to regulate the available chat and channel messaging features for users.
The default global (Org-wide) policy is automatically created, or custom messaging policies can be established and assigned. It's important to say that these policies are not designed to restrict messaging based on organizational hierarchy or the org chart. The configurable settings within a messaging policy are:
- Owners' ability to delete sent messages
- Users' ability to delete sent messages
- Users' ability to edit sent messages
- Users' capability to delete entire conversations from their chat list
Unfortunately, Teams lacks a native feature to restrict messaging based on user hierarchy. The platform is structured to foster open communication and collaboration across all organizational members.
You can try to use Information Barriers in Microsoft Teams for this specific purpose.
Information Barriers are policies that administrators can set up to restrict communication between individuals or groups.

These policies cover various aspects such as preventing users from being added to a team or channel, restricting access to team or channel content, controlling access to 1:1 and group chats, managing user access to meetings, and preventing users from appearing in the people picker. Please click Mark as Best Response & Like if my post helped you to solve your issue.
