This is a known bug in Microsoft Teams where a ghost/residual window appears during or after screen sharing. Other users have reported the same issue, where the small black or grey rectangle gets stuck in the corner and can only be dismissed by fully quitting Teams. Here are the solutions to try, in order from easiest to most thorough:

1. Clear the Teams Cache (most effective fix)

If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar and select Quit. Then press Windows + R, type %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, press OK, and delete all files and folders in that directory. Then restart Teams.

2. Reinstall Teams

One user confirmed that after clearing the cache didn't work, reinstalling Teams resolved it completely. Uninstall Teams from Windows Settings > Apps, then download the latest installer from microsoft.com.

3. Disable Hardware Acceleration

Teams relies on Windows Media Foundation for screen-sharing encoding, and on some GPUs hardware encoding can fail silently, producing a black video or ghost window. Disabling hardware encoding via a registry change causes Windows to fall back to software encoding, which resolves the issue on affected systems.

To do this in Teams: go to  Settings > General and uncheck "Disable GPU hardware acceleration" (requires a Teams restart).

4. Update Your GPU Drivers

Ensure your GPU drivers (Intel/NVIDIA/AMD) are fully up to date, as a clean driver update often resolves screen capture issues.

5. Check for HDR

If HDR or Auto-HDR is enabled on your monitor, try turning it off: go to Windows Settings > System > Display > select your monitor > turn HDR off. HDR is a common cause of black or blank screen-sharing issues in Teams.

 

Recommended order to try:

1. Clear cache and restart Teams

2. Disable GPU hardware acceleration in Teams settings

3. Update GPU drivers

4. Reinstall Teams if none of the above work

The cache clear combined with the hardware acceleration toggle resolves this for the majority of users.
