It sounds as if the school has Conditional Access, and/or Identity Protection policies defined, and the login attempt has for some reason triggered one of those policies and blocked access.
Ask the school IT department if they can check for this. If they don't know what this is, then it is very likely that a third party is managing their Microsoft 365 services for them. Ask them if they could escalate to the third party.
