Planner for Private Channels
Hello all,
Does anyone have any information on when Private Channels will get Planners?
Teams is a collaborative tool, but you can't assign tasks to people in private channels due to the lack of planners.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
- You can assign people of private channels tasks just fine. Private channel members are members of the Team so you can assign them tasks. The only thing you cannot do is have a "private" plan.
This is going to probably be awhile if at all since they have to rearchitect how Planner works to hide individual plans based on channels.
Anyway, you can use a website tab in a private channel to link straight to another plan if you want a link there, but you can most def. still assign tasks to anyone in the Team. If you need a private plan in general, then you'll have to have a Plan created on it's own, then a website tab linked to it and invite everyone in the channel, but at this point you might as well just create a new private Team for these people in the channel instead.

ChrisWebbTech Hi, its 2021 - are planners available for private channels yet? If I have 500 people in General Team and create private channel (team) with 10 people - I am not able to quickly select one of the ten people names to filter tasks and see 500 people in my planner who have nothing to do with the work. Any thoughts on how to proceed to take advantage of the planner function for smaller teams in private channels?
- Greg_SkoffCopper ContributorI just ran into this limitation today. Painful to see that it has been discussed for so long without proper functionality implemented in Teams. 😞

ChrisWebbTech I tried this solution, but it did not really work out for me. First of all, because when I create a shared plan in the Planner, I can only create it on the General channel (the only public channel) hence it would be visible to everybody in the Team (something I wanted to avoid). Secondly, adding the link of the shared plan to the private channel did not really work out for me, as it prompts users to chose how they want to open the link, and nothing really happens when you click on the "Launch it now" link. I can only open it in a browser, which is quite inconvenient... So I wouldn't really call this a workaround, more like a garage-tuning-type "solution".
But thanks for the idea anyways! It's a pity that Microsoft limits the option of Planner for public channels. I second on what someone told before me: also in our organisation it is not so easy the request a new Team for each project, so it would be great to be able to have only one Team (with different private channels) for minor projects.
- BobMyselfBrass ContributorMicrosoft Teams is clearly a mess as it is trying to combine old technologies and products: SharePoint & Outlook with a modern Groups/Channels/IM app. I can easily guess that the limitation for Planner being available on Private Channels is because the access permissions are related to ActiveDirectory management of the permissions.
Aaaah Microsoft, half-a$$ solutions is what render your products painful and useless.

ChrisWebbTech The major problem we have with this approach is that anyone with the Planner URL can see the "private" plan... so it isn't really private at all. 😞
- Only people in the parent Team could. You may just have to create a new plan and link to that. Negative it’ll create another group but just keep those with a good naming convention and you’ll be ok. Then anyone gets added to plan it’s got it’s own security etc. obviously it would be better if sub plans had unique security but we got to make due with what we got now unfortunately
- BobMyselfBrass ContributorMicrosoft folks, any update on making available Planner for Private Channels?
There are so many limitations on Private Channels, that they are often useless. I don't want to create a private Team each time I want to have an activity for a subset of my Team!!! - Sonja Van AelstCopper Contributor
MJKsotech Is there any news about availability of MS Planner in a private channel ?
- MJKsotechBrass Contributor
Sonja Van Aelst Hi, still no update on this. We had to use the work around of making planners online then pulling them into teams via the 'Website' function on 'add a tab'
- I wouldn't expect to see a Private plan for Private channels for a long time. If anything they might at least make the Planner tab available to use to add plans outside the channel etc. Similar to the Website tab option sooner than that, but it takes a serious architecture overhaul to make plans private to channels in an existing group. It'll probably end up just being new stand alone plans with a new group, and in that case if you need a private plan, you might as well just create a Private Team from the get go and add plans to that.

ChrisWebbTech When you're in a larger organization they are stingy about creating new teams. So now we have our 30 person grad student cohort in one Team, and we have 7 teams within that with Channels. I WISH we could do a Planner for each individual channel. Would be lovely.
- The documentation says that planner isn’t currently supported! There’s no ETA for this out unfortunately but hopefully there will be a solution next year

Cline_B MJKsotech BobMyself and all: I would encourage you to vote on this Uservoice item, which shows that this feature is Under Review. After you do, you'll get updates on its progress: Create Planner tabs within Private Channels – Welcome to UserVoice!
Thank you.
- BalazsKiss905Brass ContributorI tried to vote on this, but the link you shared did not bring me to this thread, I couldn't even find the Create Planner tabs thread using the search option. 😞

MJKsotech , A pretty good work around to use it in Private Channels is to create the Planner in a standard channel & then remove the tab.
Open the Plan in web client.
Copy the Planner Link
Open the private channel & add the link as a website to the private channel tab.
Works pretty well for our team, worth a try until they add planner to private teams.

JesseIT740 when I tried your workaround (using the website link to add a planner as a tab on a private channel), it showed all of my planners. Is there a way to isolate this to just one plan?
- chrispaivacwbCopper Contributor
JesseIT740 still not being a "private" planner and everyone can see using the link address.
- KarinalaosaCopper ContributorThat looks a nice workaround. How is the privacy maintained if you use this? Can the People in the channel still find the tasks e.g. by searching etcetera.
- mattias-skogIron ContributorWe mainly use channels for managing different projects and without the ability to use Planner in private channels, and in the upcoming shared channels, they are useless to us. Planner in private and shared channels is something that Microsoft need to work on if they want the use of private and shared channels to bloom!

Dear Microsoft, Are you able to advise an ETA on when this development might be released?
It would be incredibly helpful functionality
Many Thanks

- PwrPlatformEnthusiastCopper ContributorHi Everyone!
I think I've found a great workaround by using SharePoint Online Lists (available in private channels too). https://sharepointviews.com/board-view-in-microsoft-lists-is-available-now/
We can now customise sharepoint online lists to look like a Microsoft Planner Kanban Board.
Essentially we can have all the functionality of Planner but customise and add as many fields as we want & have all the rich text formatting & security features that Planner can't offer at this time. Triggers available with Power Automate might make this an absolute Power House.- LauraStein-MarmonRailCopper ContributorBrilliant! I am implementing this on a shared channel right now. Thanks for posting.

PwrPlatformEnthusiast really good idea. unfortunately, it is not really easy to customize it and have the columns such as assigned person and due date.
I believe we still dont have a full integration on the Private channels.
Looking forward to it !

Hello everyone! I found a solution.
Add the to do with teams on mobile phone.
This is what you'll get:
1- you won't see to do form in teams on pc
2- you can anyway manage to do activities directly on the app "Tasks of Planner and to do " in the teams app for pc version.
The reason why you won't see the form is because on mobile phone you've tasks, in pc you have Tasks of planner and to do app. Microsoft is moving the app "Tasks of Planner and to do" into "tasks" but it get times.
Here is the link: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/manage-tasks-app - POWEREHBrass Contributor
We need this and customizable permissions for Plans ASAP.
