but maybe there is some sort of a workaround?
They're not so concerned about chat messages, but it's about the sharing of files. When the external shares a (malicious) file... they need to see and be aware of the possibility that the file could be malicious.

stefanhems Files in teams are always scanned before they are being shared so this should not be of any issue.
