NDI Broadcast Feature Intermittent and Unreliable

Hi friends. I'm dealing with an NDI / Microsoft Teams "Broadcast with NDI" issue and am hoping I can get some help. I have a streaming system through my work where my streaming computer is custom-made and running VMIX. We pull our virtual speakers in through NDI via Teams on a separate computer that's on the same network. We've done this for years without issue. I ran a live stream with 10 presenters in Teams using NDI and the active speaker input in VMIX just a few weeks ago and had zero issues.

Yesterday, I went to test for an upcoming stream, and for the life of me, Teams would immediately stop the NDI broadcast feature right after I start it and the inputs would not appear on my streaming computer's VMIX's NDI window. I swapped out the computers running Teams twice and got the same result. I have run all the updates I could, rebooted everything including my switch, router, etc., but nothing's working. Has anyone dealt with this before? Seems to be a Teams-related matter vs. a network or computer issue. Later in the day, I did a Teams clear cache and it brought in 1 speaker in, but didn't pull in active speaker. My only next step at the moment is to roll-back teams to an older version in hopes that fixes it.

Thoughts, recommendations?

  • fyount I opened a ticket with Microsoft. They confirmed that they rolled out an update on July 27 that ultimately broke the NDI feature within teams. Once I brought up my ticket to them, they investigated and rolled back the NDI update to the previous version. That is why everything is working as it should now.

I've observed the same behavior.  Unsure of when this began but can confirm as of today August 07, 23 seeing this behavior during one of our productions.  New callers that join the meeting are not available as selectable sources from the machine that is broadcasting NDI from Teams Meeting.  Leaving the meeting and rejoining once all callers have joined makes them available and selectable.  Unsure if there are other issues.  Seeing this on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 with versions 1.6.00.20776 and 1.6.00.18681.

We are facing the same problem. In addition to the problems described above, the active speaker view is also completely missing.

So for some reason on Monday, the NDI broadcast feature started working for us again. Has anyone else experienced positive functionality on teams with the NDI? Or did I just get lucky?

  • I don't think roling back teams will solve this issue. As the it is not only the client but also teams itself. But in this case I would recommend to create a ticket at MS.

Yes, we are experiencing the same issues. It seems if you let all of your callers join and then start the NDI broadcast it will let you bring in those callers but if anyone drops or is added they can not rejoin. We spent four hours with our network team. The firewall is the only thing that will temporarily allow callers back in.
