NDI Broadcast Feature Intermittent and Unreliable
- Aug 16, 2023
fyount I opened a ticket with Microsoft. They confirmed that they rolled out an update on July 27 that ultimately broke the NDI feature within teams. Once I brought up my ticket to them, they investigated and rolled back the NDI update to the previous version. That is why everything is working as it should now.
So for some reason on Monday, the NDI broadcast feature started working for us again. Has anyone else experienced positive functionality on teams with the NDI? Or did I just get lucky?

ccotton We have been doing a couple of events with TEAMS connected to VMIX on another computer via NDI both directions, which is something we have done in the past many times with excellent results.
Those events took place in mid October 2023 and, the last one, the 21st of November 2023. We tested thoroughly those events and everything worked fine, but as soon as the real event started NDI stated to fail. It did not disconnect the incoming calls completely but their image and audio were failing intermittently. I had only 1 user, and believe me these computers are high-end ones which, a few months ago, were handling a lot more without any trouble. I observed that the problems seemed to be happening every time the message regarding privacy was showing up in Teams. Anyone experiencing similar problems now?

Frank_Vancast We held a few live streams while using NDI during this timeframe and didn't experience any issues outside of telling the external presenters to reboot their laptops. Are you still experiencing issues?

ccotton ,
We haven't had the chance to test again. Currently, we are avoiding using Teams with vMix for live events until we can accurately reproduce the issue and figure out how to resolve it.
We always advise presenters to restart their computers. I was in charge of production on November 21st, and I believe the problem was clearly on my Teams laptop. That computer was running only Teams and the NDI tools (NDI webcam) to input audio and video that was published on vMix on another PC. Approximately half an hour after connecting with external presenters, an annoying message regarding the privacy policy kept appearing repeatedly and with relatively high frequency in Teams. Each time the message appeared, the video and audio from the external presenter lagged dramatically (completely non-understandable) for about 10 to 15 seconds. After that, it would start working properly for 15-30 seconds (even lip-sync was okay), and then the cycle would repeat. I tried restarting both the Teams PC and the remote PC, but after restarting, the issue would immediately reoccur. I was using the latest version of NDI tools and a recent version of Teams too.
On the next day, November 22, we had a second event with the same configuration in the afternoon. In the morning, we reproduced the problem and found that it occurred after a remote presenter dropped out and logged back in. We tried using "less NDI" and moved the Teams session to the same vMIX PC. We then used NDI in only one direction, as Teams could capture the NDI video from vMIX directly using direct-x via the "external" option in vMix. However, we encountered the same problem even when using NDI within the same PC. Eventually, we decided to eliminate the Teams NDI streaming feature and used screen capturing and virtual audio cables to run the event in the old 'pre-NDI' style
