Migrate chat history Teams

Is it possible to migrate chat messages from a old tenant to a new tenant (teams chat)?
Does anyone have any advice?

  • There is currently no native Microsoft method to fully migrate Teams chat history between tenants, so you generally have three approaches.

Option 1: Use a third party migration tool. Some tools can migrate or preserve chat history, but fidelity varies. Reactions, timestamps, attachments, and conversation structure may not transfer exactly as they appeared in the source tenant.

Option 2: Export the chats using Microsoft Purview or eDiscovery for compliance and retention purposes. This preserves the records, but they will not appear as native chats in the destination tenant.

Option 3: Migrate the users, Teams, channels, and files while keeping the old tenant available in read only form for a limited period so users can reference historical conversations.

Before selecting a migration solution, I would confirm exactly how the vendor handles Teams chat data and what limitations apply.

A small pilot migration is definitely recommended before moving the full organization.

Old post I know, but I built a teams migration solution, both for teams Collab chats and also private 1:1 chats. I also offer the usual suite of migration tools as well.  Its migrated over 1036 teams chats from sites (Collab chats) and also 600+ users private 1:1 chats. We can do ms tenant to ms tenant, or to Google, or from Google to MS....

I had to build it, as migwiz doesn't migrate teams anymore, and neither do the other offerings, something to do with ews deprecation. Which we don't use,  our service is pure API.

As for a "tool" i noticed there is a requested feature at Teams UserVoice. Go there and vote to stay updated.

  • Not out of the box. There are some tools out there 3rd party that can At a limited basis but Teams does not yet have any migration tools or channel move options, even in the same tenant.
