I have had 3-4 different people send me invites through Microsoft teams on my windows 10 laptop. All occasions I have not been able to successfully connect with people? I don't understand the issue. ...

I guess there is some kind of network problem. You can test your network with a tool called Network Testing Companion. https://bit.ly/teamsntc
You can also try to do a test call from your Teams client.
