Microphone unmutes between new call and original call on hold

When I am on mute in a call and go on hold to accept a second call, the microphone unmutes. Further, the microphone stays unmuted when I resume the original call. Is there a way to disable this setting? It leads to awkward situations where you can interrupt the original call, as you can imagine.
