Ability to edit Teams documents as a Guest using Office 365 account from another company

I work for a consulting company with many clients using Teams to collaborate on documents.  Often we're not given an Office 365 account, but instead a guest access account.  As my consulting company has it's own Office 365 accounts, can we use those accounts to edit customer documents using the full Office 365 apps installed on our laptop (rather than have to use the on-line app versions)? I've tried to select docs in Teams and "Open in Word" (for example).  I'm taken to a login screen.  I enter my consulting company login account, and the login screen just pops again and again asking for me to login (no error message)

Thanks for the reply.  When you say "Correct and that's a very common scenario", are you implying that it should work.  The fact I can't login is probably some other authentication issue, not the fact that I don't have an Office 365 account linked to the client's Office 365 / Teams instance?
