Word under Windows 11 open links wrong !
Here some stuff you can try :
Option 1: Force Word to Open Cloud Files in Desktop App
- In Word, go to:
File > Options > Advanced - Scroll to "Link Handling"
- Ensure that "Open supported hyperlinks to Office files in Office desktop apps" is checked.
This only applies to links clicked inside Word documents.
Option 2: Avoid Cloud Links — Use UNC or Relative Paths Instead
If the documents must be on OneDrive, but you want to force desktop Word to open, try:
- Opening the file from your local synced folder (C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\...) and insert the link manually using Insert > Link > Browse > Local file
- This will insert a local path instead of https://d.docs.live.net/...
BUT Word may rewrite this path back to cloud link later, especially if it's saved while connected to the cloud version.
Option 3: Store Documents Outside OneDrive (Best workaround)
If opening in desktop Word is critical, don’t store both files on OneDrive.
Instead:
- Store the primary document locally
- Link to local copies of the others
Drawback: No cloud backup/versioning. But it solves the WebWord issue.
Option 4: Disable Office File Behavior in OneDrive Settings (Partial Fix)
- Right-click the OneDrive icon in your taskbar > Settings
- Go to the Office tab
- Uncheck “Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open”
This disables some co-authoring behaviors and forces Office to use local sync copies.

Don't forget to mark as solution if my answer suits you
Option 1: I already tried with NO luck - see earlier postings
Option 2: I NEVER had used 'cloud links' only done when running under Window 11
Option 3: Not useable at all - and too it destroys the setup when running under Windows 10
Optrion 4: I have NO 'Office tab' ????
I think I'm 'out there' where I have to wait till MS gets ALL details corrected in Windows 11/MS Office and more ... = dropping Windows 11 for now 😠
