I have some type of small box with a gray background which recommends words pop up while I'm typing a document in ms word 365. i cannot find the option in getting rid of it. does anyone know? A screenshot has been uploaded to this post. Thanks.

This is a setting of the operating system. In Windows 10 Settings, turn off "Show text suggestions as I type." (The details may depend on the exact version of Windows 10 you are running, but you can always search the Settings app for "text suggestions.")
