Pick up where you left off not working

I have had this issue with Word on PC for so long that I can't even remember when it started! Probably back to when the feature was introduced.

More often than not, the tag on the right scroll bar that allows you to Resume Reading, is missing.

It is almost impossible to work out a pattern to when this happens, but it most often seems to be on the most recent document. If I open an older document (one I was working on last week perhaps), then it is far more likely to be there.

However, if I open the offending document on my iPad, then it works.

So I "think" this is only a problem on the desktop, at least with me.

I have searched for answers countless times, and sent feedback to MS (with no response).  And I have asked this question before.

Does anyone have any clue why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't?

I am not even sure where it stores the pickup point. I assume it is in the metadata in the file somewhere since this works across devices.

As a note, I am an author, so my documents are large.

  • Hi, could you this issue replicated in Word web? like you did in IPad.
It sounds like a load delay in Oneedrive

If it is a delay, it's a long one! I haven't looked at the web version of word.
Do you know how and where the data is stored? If it is stored in the meta of the file itself, I can't see how a delay would affect only that, and not the entire file.

A couple of times I have opened a document and not touched it to see if it appears, and it doesn't.

Yes, obviously, is a long delay, but in my experience resume reading is affected with many factors, OS, Office version and updates, and so on sometimes works fine and sometime doesn't.
My question is to separate and identify the problem's source, so if in your ipad and web version the problem didn't replicate, so i'd recomend to you focus your attention in the local version of Office.
        It's an opinion.
        Regards.
