How do you restrict or fiilter group of users from Showing up in SharePoint Online PeoplePicker

On SharePoint onprem we have to filter where students are excluded from the people picker so only the Scholl Staff will display 

On365 Sharepoint when we search on people picker both students and staff will display. Is there a way i can restrict by groups or based on OU?  Can it be done based on a User Profile property or is there a custom people picker available for SPO
