failed set-up of a passkey for a personal MS account

After scanning the QR code (on the PC screen) in the Authenticator app on the Iphone, the error message “Error adding the passkey - Microsoft Authenticator does not support this passkey” (translated from German) appears.

What does this mean ?  How to prevent?

Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Reger,

im facing the same issue. I try to add passkey from amazon, ebay and telekom for example with no success. im also noticed that im not able to add a passkey to my microsoft account too. Same error all the time.

The solution hints from kidd_ip are not very helpful and does not match. Did you find any solution of this?

    best,

I have the same issue. Latest version of iOS... Latest version of Authenticator App.
I just used AI to try and answer my question and this is what it said (which seems to match my findings):

Q: Can you use passkeys for other apps in "Microsoft Authenticator" for IOS
A: No, passkeys created in Microsoft Authenticator for iOS can only be used for Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) accounts, not other non-Microsoft apps. Microsoft Authenticator's passkey feature is specifically for work or school accounts that are managed by Entra ID, and you cannot use it to store passkeys for other apps like Google or Facebook. These non-Microsoft accounts would use a different passkey provider, such as iCloud Keychain on your iPhone, notes mobile-jon.com.

Annoying, but at least for now it makes sense why it does not work. :(

  • Try to fix by below steps:

    • Update the Authenticator App: Ensure that you have the latest version of the Microsoft Authenticator app installed on your iPhone. Sometimes, updates include fixes for such issues.
    • Check iOS Version: Make sure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS. Compatibility issues can sometimes be resolved with an update.
    • Re-register the Passkey: Try removing the existing passkey (if any) and re-registering it. Sometimes, re-registering can fix issues with passkey registration.
    • Use Security Info Portal: If the issue persists, try setting up the passkey through the Security Info portal on your iPhone instead of directly through the Authenticator app.
